Playing SMP

SMP means survival multiplayer, so it overlaps with the broader Survival category. Servers using the label often emphasize a shared world and community, but it does not guarantee vanilla gameplay, a small group or a particular set of rules.

Before you choose a server

  • See whether joining is open or requires a whitelist application.
  • Read expectations for shared projects, pranks and player conflict.
  • Check season lengths, world resets and how new players join an established world.

How to join

Open a server page to check its supported editions, versions and entry requirements. Use the address shown for your edition.

Java Edition

  1. Copy the Java IP from the server page.
  2. In Minecraft, open Multiplayer, then Add Server.
  3. Paste it into Server Address, save and join.

Bedrock Edition

  1. Copy the Bedrock IP and note the separate port.
  2. On mobile or Windows, open Play, then Servers and Add Server.
  3. Enter the IP in Server Address and the listed port in Port, then save and join.

Console editions generally do not offer the same Add Server option. Crossplay is available only when the listing supports both editions. Follow any whitelist or modpack instructions on the server page.

Common questions

What is the difference between SMP and Survival?

SMP describes survival played with other people, while Survival is the broader gameplay category. A server can belong to both. The SMP label often highlights the social side of a shared world, but you still need to read its rules and features to understand the actual experience.

Do I need to know someone to join an SMP?

Not necessarily. Some SMPs welcome anyone with a compatible client, while others ask you to apply or accept a whitelist invitation. Check the joining instructions and any age or activity requirements. An application can also explain the community's expectations before you commit to playing there regularly.
