Playing Survival

Survival servers build on Minecraft's resource gathering, crafting and exploration. Some stay close to the base game, while others add shops, skills or custom challenges that change how you progress.

Before you choose a server

  • Read the land protection and griefing rules before choosing a base location.
  • Compare difficulty, keep inventory settings and what happens when you die.
  • Look for world reset plans and limits on farms, redstone or exploration.

How to join

Open a server page to check its supported editions, versions and entry requirements. Use the address shown for your edition.

Java Edition

  1. Copy the Java IP from the server page.
  2. In Minecraft, open Multiplayer, then Add Server.
  3. Paste it into Server Address, save and join.

Bedrock Edition

  1. Copy the Bedrock IP and note the separate port.
  2. On mobile or Windows, open Play, then Servers and Add Server.
  3. Enter the IP in Server Address and the listed port in Port, then save and join.

Console editions generally do not offer the same Add Server option. Crossplay is available only when the listing supports both editions. Follow any whitelist or modpack instructions on the server page.

Common questions

How can I tell whether a survival server is close to vanilla?

Read the listing for changes to crafting, travel, combat and progression. Labels such as vanilla or semi-vanilla describe an approach, but each server defines them differently. Protection plugins can coexist with familiar gameplay, while shops, skills and custom items may change how you gather resources or build.

Will my base be safe from other players?

That depends on the server's rules and protection system. Some servers let you claim land, some enforce protection through staff, and others allow raiding. Find out how to protect a build, whether claims expire and what evidence staff need before you invest time in a large base.
